Insurance For Domestic and Commercial Cleaners

Whether you’re a domestic or a commercial cleaner, you’ll be in close contact with other people and their property. And despite your best efforts to ensure that you maintain a safe working environment, accidents do happen. That’s why having insurance will make your business operations that much smoother.

So while you’re busy making homes and offices shine like a diamond, we’ll make sure your reputation shines with Insurance for Cleaners.

Protect your cleaning business with Public Liability Insurance*

Public Liability insurance provides protection for you and your business in the event that a customer, supplier or a member of the public is injured or sustains property damage as a result of your negligent business activities.

For example, if a client or member of the public slips over the floor you’ve just mopped and sustains an injury, you could be held liable. Or if you use a cleaning agent which causes\ a reaction and damages your client’s bench tops or floor, you may be held liable for the cost of repairing or replacing them. Public Liability insurance can even cover you for something as simple as accidentally knocking over an antique vase whilst dusting the mantelpiece.

Many commercial properties will require you to have Public Liability Insurance if you want to work as a cleaning contractor. Your clients will feel more comfortable knowing that you are protected by Public Liability Insurance if you work as a domestic cleaner.

What does it typically cover*?

Public Liability insurance covers:

  • Compensation for:
    • personal injury suffered by a third party (e.g. a customer, supplier or member of the public)
    • damage to property owned by a third party due to your negligent business activities
  • legal and defence costs associated with a covered claim

Why do cleaners should consider public liability insurance?

From the moment you step onto a client’s premises, you are responsible to take reasonable steps for the safety of others and the protection of their property whilst carrying out your cleaning duties.

Without the right insurance, even a minor mishap could have devastating financial consequences on your business. Particularly as if you work as a sole trader, you are personally held accountable both legally and financially for all aspects of your business, meaning your personal assets are at risk if something goes wrong.

A claim could arise from honest mistakes, such as:

  • Forgetting to display a ‘wet floor’ sign which results in somebody slipping over and injuring themselves;
  • The cord from the vacuum cleaner you’re using causing someone to trip over;
  • You accidentally break a mirror, ornament, piece of furniture or household item

What other types of insurance can I consider?

General property/ tool insurance^

If you rely on your own cleaning equipment to run your business, would you be able to replace them if they were lost, stolen or damaged? Contents insurance covers your business contents or stock if they are damaged in a fire, storm or due to malicious damage or some other defined event listed in the policy.

Portable Equipment insurance^

Portable equipment (or general property) insurance can cover specified items such as tools, business equipment or electronic items, or unspecified items of lower value.

Personal Accident and Illness Insurance^

Personal Accident and Illness insurance can provide levels of cover for loss of income if you are unable to work, suffer permanent disablement and even death as a result of an unexpected injury or illness (even if it occurs outside of your employment).

Claim story

The insured was cleaning an office and needed to clean under a computer. When they lifted the computer, the cabling got caught causing them to drop the computer which smashed on the floor. The insured’s Public Liability insurer covered the costs of the computer, minus the policy excess.
